Veteran Affairs Education Benefits
VA Education Benefits at Vernon College assists eligible service members, veterans and their dependents in obtaining assistance and information on educational benefits while attending VC. Vernon College is an approved training institution for both Department of Veterans Affairs and Texas Veterans Commission Hazelwood education benefits. Department of Veteran Affairs Benefits
The programs under the Department of Veterans Affairs include:
• Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill®
• Chapter 31 – Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
• Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill®
• Chapter 35 - Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA)
• Chapter 1606 - Montgomery GI Bill® for Selected Reserve
A Benefit Request Form must be completed for each term requesting certification with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Texas Veterans Commission (TVC): Hazelwood Benefits
Overview: The Hazelwood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption public institutions of higher education in Texas. The Institution of Higher Education (IHE) is the final decision-making authority on student.
Fees Covered: All mandatory fees required to complete the course are included in the exemption.
Approved Programs: All programs approved by The US Department of Veterans Affairs are also approved for Hazelwood Exemption at Vernon College.
Application Requirements: A Hazelwood Application, qualifying DD214, and supporting documentation for Veteran Eligibility, Child (Legacy) Eligibility, or Spouse/Dependent Eligibility must be provided before the end of the term.
A Benefit Request Form must be completed for each term requesting hours to be charged to TVC.
An additional Application for Continued Enrollment must be on file at the beginning of every calendar year.
Tuition Deferments: Hazelwood Exemptions are eligible for Tuition Deferment.
GPA Eligibility Requirements: Academic degree and certificate students must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) GPA. Continuing Education (CE) certificates of completion are not subject to SAP review by the college.
Dependents must be registered with selective service or be exempt.
Certification of Benefits
Vernon College processes all VA Education Benefits and the Hazelwood Exemption through the Office of Student Success. This department is responsible for collecting and processing all required paperwork, submitting certifications, and assisting students with questions about eligibility, documentation, and benefit usage. The Student Success Office serves as the central point of contact for all military‑related educational benefits at the college.
